The Inertia

Attitudes abound regarding surfing’s inevitable Olympic debut. For those who don’t think the sport belongs in the Olympics at all, best move along. This one goes out to all of those who worry that 1) Japan gets no waves and that 2) As a result, putting some of the world’s best in micro-conditions won’t be the best look for the sport.

As far as we know, the International Olympic Committee has every intention of having Olympic surfing take place in the ocean. The chosen venue? A town called Ichinomiya in the prefecture of Chiba.

Here, Vissla’s Japanese surf team samples an average day in Chiba, and to be honest, it looks pretty fun. Like Newport or Bondi – places that, if chosen to host Olympic surfing, wouldn’t elicit nearly as visceral a collective response online.

So what do you think? Knowing what you may not have known before watching this edit, is Olympic surfing redeemed?
