Being a shaper is one of those jobs that looks like it could either be a dream or a nightmare. You spend day after day, hours on top of hours, grinding away pieces of foam that you ultimately give to somebody else at the lowest possible cost that keeps them coming back and puts food on your table. It’s a grind for some shapers. Enough of a grind that surfing, the same thing that brought them to a passion career to begin with, has to take a back seat. And for those shapers their ability to charge can take a nose dive.
Now, when we paint that picture it all seems pretty sad. But what about the lucky few that live the dream life? Surfing, and surfing well. And when you’re not surfing you’re in a room creating something that keeps your mind on surfing. As a matter of fact, if you’re Galen Eckenroth not only has your surfing not suffered but somehow your average everyday adventures are set to an awesome soundtrack. So this is Galen’s life. Surfing and shaping and shaping and surfing. Cruising on the beach and cruising in the shaping bay. Somewhere along the road Galen made better choices than all of us stuck at a desk Monday to Friday.
