While it’s thrilling to watch the pros gracefully handle beautifully shaped waves in idyllic conditions, sometimes you just want to see a total shit-show. Luckily, nothing, and I mean nothing, produces a more chaotic lineup than a good backwash wave.

In a clip posted to Instagram by Carlsbad, Calif. local Billy Nelson, Beacons in Encinitas is the latest location to host absolute carnage at the hands backwash. Unpredictable waves send groms flying in every direction, to the sounds of foam boards smashing into each other. It’s a scene reminiscent of the “Grom Gladiator Pit” at Terramar in Dylan Graves’ Weird Waves.

We’ll get back to our regularly scheduled programming in a minute, but just take a moment of your day to watch a grom getting launched 10 feet in the air, directly at another grom. You won’t regret it.
