This year was a big one for us. In September, we celebrated our 5 year Anniversary! Where did the time go? In recognition of our achievement and a landmark year, we wanted to share with you 13 Inertia videos that we are most proud of. But, of course, we’re proud of everything we do. So if you want to check out our Youtube page or Vimeo, be our guest. But for now, sit back, relax, and get stoked on these rad flicks.
1. HI-5: Rob Machado, Kelly Slater, and Surfing’s Greatest Heat
Sports transcend. That’s what they do. That’s why we love them, and why every once in a while a moment arrives that is so transcendent that people relish dissecting it many years after it passed. The high five between Rob Machado and Kelly Slater at the 1995 Pipe Masters is one such moment.
2. CREATORS: Clark Little
Clark is a legend. He’s captured some of the most amazing shots in surfing, and certainly deserves all of the credit and praise he’s received thus far. Hearing how he gets the perfect shot is amazing.
3. ICON: Alex Gray
Alex is definitely one of the best surfers to ever come out of Los Angeles. I think the title sums it up quite well.
4. ICON: Mike Coots
“To help sharks… it was worth losing a limb just for that alone. And to help other amputees and kids that are dealing with limb loss, I feel really blessed.” – Mike Coots
5. Kyle Thiermann Might Be Surfing’s Most Valuable Ambassador
As a curly-haired grom growing up in Santa Cruz, Kyle Thiermann boldly championed causes like campaign finance reform and Net Neutrality. While his close friends pitched in to support, the surf community wasn’t exactly rallying around him in force. Philanthropy isn’t always “hip.” Thiermann says he still gets harassed on occasion for rocking a wetsuit during his own TED Talk.
6. CREATORS: Eric Goodman
Eric Goodman radiates inspiration. He’s an incredibly peaceful, real human being who educates health in every sense of the word.
7. CREATORS: Cyrus Sutton
What can’t he do? Here’s Cyrus inspiring others to live meaningful, adventurous lives. He wants everybody to become a filmmaker.
8. CREATORS: Leah Dawson
Watching Leah Dawson surf is mesmerizing. It’s a dance. “My biggest compliment is not that I surf like a man, but that I surf like a woman,” says Leah. “If someone watches me ride a wave, I want them at the end of it to know that I’m in love with the ocean.”
9. Travis Pastrana Remembers Erik Roner
After his friend and fellow stuntman passed away tragically, Travis Pastrana was more than a bit choked up. Shortly after, he swung by the office and shared stories about Erik Roner.
10. HEADSPACE: Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz
Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz is nothing short of a legend to the surfing community. Having spent nearly a quarter-century living along the road with his family, he is, quite simply, the pioneer of the nomadic lifestyle so sought after by surfers around the globe. He’s made his way onto our list of the Top 10 Most Influential Surfers of All Time, and shared some words of wisdom with us in our Classics series.
11. Meet Kimi Werner: The Enlightened Woman Who Rode a Great White Shark
Most people around the world know Kimi Werner as “the woman who rode the back of a Great White Shark.” She is that, but she’s also much, MUCH more.
12. CREATORS: Donald Brink
Frustrated with the performance of traditional surfboard designs in challenging conditions, Donald Brink set out to experiment with various asymmetrical shapes. One-of-a-kind, hand-shaped surf craft – designed specifically according to the rider’s needs and preferences.
13. Party Shark Gets Kicked out of Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles
Sharks are everywhere these days. Next thing you know they’ll be taking your job, especially, if you’re a surfboard shaper. This shark brought his most high performance (apparently edible) shape down to the Trestles Hurley Pro. His dream was to get it under the feet of the world #1 surfer, but the WSL wasn’t stoked about that AT ALL. The struggle is real if you’re an unknown shaper and/or a shark.
