Foiling has slowly become an acceptable form of surfing. Mostly because practitioners have figured out that it’s not to be done in a lineup. But there are plenty of other places where it’s totally kosher. Where waves are mushy and it’s really high tide or nondescript spots where no one goes because the waves don’t actually break that often.
Or on windswept rivers like the Columbia River in the Gorge east of Portland, Oregon. And you don’t need to kite or windsurf anymore to use a foil. You can try this packable little hand-held device called a wing to have fun in downwind swell on a foil. This is Dan Gavere and 60 seconds of drone footage that make this relatively new endeavor look like so much fun. The drone captures Dan moving bank-to-bank near a traditional spot on the river known as the Fish Hatchery.
