Johnny Kraft is one of the most stylish surfers around, and one of my favorite surfers to shoot.
Timmy Reyes had this little wave all to himself this day. This place is normally crowded and localized, but nobody knew it was good this day.
I did a drive down to L.A. to chase a swell and shoot with Alex Grey. I’ve known Alex since he was a little kid, and we did our 1st trip to Costa Rica. He rules.
Pat Gudauskas and his brothers came up for this last huge swell at Mavericks. Pat was on fire and scored some of the biggest bombs of the day.
The lighting is very tricky in Santa Cruz, so I learned a long time ago to pay attention to where the sun comes up, and where it sets. There are about 10 days out of the year when it sets in front of the wave here.
The moonrise over the harbor in Santa Cruz as seen from Steamer Lane.
One of my favorite spots.
Kadin Panesi is one of the most underrated surfers around. Anyone who’s seen him surf knows.
Right down the street from my house is a nice little wedge. It fickle, but when it's good, it's great.
The Lighthouse at Steamer Lane.
Frozen foam ball.
Mavericks has teeth.
Alex Grey is a blur. One day he is in Tahiti, the next day he’s in Canada, and a week later he’s in South Africa. He doesn’t waste any time. I think he’s trying to catch enough waves for himself and his brother Chris, who passed away at a young age. He’s doing a good job.
My brother in law is a pilot and has a 1940s piper cub. I go flying with him all the time and love seeing and capturing all the action of Santa Cruz from above.
Another moonrise from Santa Cruz above the Walton Lighthouse.
Shaun Burns almost took the Cold Water Classic this year, narrowly losing to Nate Yeomans, but taking and equally impressive 2nd. Expect to see big things from this kid after he graduates this year.
Shawn Dollar is a man on a mission and his mission is simple - ride the biggest, gnarliest wave in the world. So far he has done just that, and it holds true in the Guiness book of World records for biggest wave ever paddled into.
Teddy Navarro at Newport Point during an epic hurricane swell in 2014.
Timmy Reyes on Main St. Huntington Beach @ 11p.m.
Timmy Reyes hates it when I come down and beat him on his home course.
Capitola has the best sunrises. This one was so spectacular that I dropped my phone in the ocean. I guess I was frothing too hard.
Wilem Banks has really excelled in the last couple years. He has to be one of the best up-and-coming surfers from California.
