The Inertia

Our hats go off to the hobby and professional surf photographers that snap the pretty pictures that captivate us. They beautify our Instagram feeds, document historic moments, help us daydream during workday doldrums, and most importantly inspire us to get after it more. (See also 50 of our favorite photos from 2017).

For a select group, beautiful imagery awakens an inner shutter bug, and for those looking for tricks of the trade as it were, Gold Coast photog Dylan Brayshaw has you covered. Here are five hacks he’s acquired over the years:

1) Putting candle wax on your lens port helps to shed water droplets
2) Take artistic split shots with a dome port
3) Camera settings should be set to 1/2000 shutter speed, auto ISO, and set F-stop at 4.0 for sharp photos
4) A backdoor floaty mouth mount allows you to still have the mount to put on surfboard or main camera housing
5) Leave water drops on lens port to give added bokeh dreamy look

Results may vary, as Brayshaw makes this all look pretty easy. But hopefully this little video helps the photogs among us to unleash their creativity more effectively!
