The Inertia

Looking to get out of the house and into the water for 4th of July weekend? We all need to satisfy our patriotic needs in some way or another, and celebrating with some surf always makes things much, much better. If you think you need to be shelling out cash to enjoy a surf trip, think again. Believe it or not, you can travel absolutely anywhere in the world on a budget and still have the time of your life. It’s all about being resourceful and open to adventure; watch how our friends at Kordoroy do it. Experience the most kick-ass Independence Day with five great last-minute adventures, ranked on a scale from 1-10 in surf, beauty, and nightlife.

1. San Diego

Without doubt, one of the best places to celebrate the 4th of July is San Diego. The entire area is ridiculously beautiful with great, consistent waves, killer beaches, awesome campsites for partying, or taking it easy with good company. San Diego’s got the best of both worlds, from the Gas Lamp District in Downtown for premium nightlife, to North County for a more relaxed time. It’s surely a go-to for adventurers and families alike.

2. San Clemente

A bit further up the coast, San Clemente is known as a surf sanctuary, which truly lives up to its name. Home of the famous Lower Trestles, T-Street, and San Onofre, there’s rarely a shortage of world-class surf in the area. The gorgeous scenery is very similar to San Diego, and “The Triangle” is a great stretch of bars if you’re looking to get loose and enjoy some drinks in the heart of San Clemente.

3. North County Los Angeles

The city of Los Angeles has a lot to offer in terms of nightlife, but North County is almost always the best bet for waves. Although it’s typically more inconsistent than San Clemente or San Diego, you may get lucky with some summer swell. Leo Carrillo in Malibu is a great spot to camp, dive, and surf; plus, it’s nestled only a few minutes outside of town. It’s one of the most beautiful, quick escapes from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles.

4. Big Sur

The further north you travel, the more rural and relaxed your 4th of July adventure will become. That’s not to say the waves will behave accordingly. If you’re priority is scoring barrels over booze, definitely consider camping up in Big Sur for the weekend. The crazy awesome landscape is out of a freaking fairytale and the variable weather produces some serious surf.

No list of surf destinations is ever complete without Santa Cruz. Without question Santa Cruz is one of the best surf towns in California. There are a myriad of shredding options, from Steamer Lane to Pleasure Point to hidden inlets that you have to discover for yourself. Be adventurous up here, as you may just find your own peak of perfection or some epic forest camping. If you’re looking for a healthy combination of waves and partying this Independence Day, Santa Cruz is the place to be and it definitely won’t leave you disappointed.
