The Inertia

When the trade winds blow from the southeast on Bali’s Bukit peninsula, they groom the lines to ruler-straight perfection. Often, however, those trades blow pretty hard, and even though it’s offshore, Uluwatu is rarely oil-glass smooth. In the early mornings, before the offshores pick up, Ulus can suffer from a bit of morning sickness — unorganized, lumpy, and shapeless.

But sometimes, when the stars align, you’ll run into just the right amount of offshores and a swell that is big enough to send those perfect waves over the famous reef. That leads to mornings like the one you see above, where the surface is silky smooth, the waves are perfect, and everyone surfing has a huge, beaming smile on their faces.
