The state of Israel is usually known for its winds of war, but every once in while the wind brings some great waves. With 190km of coastline – 50km of which are closed to the public due to government or military use – the number of surfers in Israel is around 70,000 and growing. Ever since Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz introduced surfing around 1956 when he came to Israel as a volunteer to serve the IDF, surfing has become a part of this nation.
Surfing is not only a past time activity, but it’s a part of the culture and a way of life for many. It’s no surprise, really. Surfing and going to the beach provides Israelis with the ability to escape the depressing reality of the ceaseless conflict with our Palestinian neighbors. Although the sea in this region is flat by many people’s standards, the lineup can be crowded with surfers year-round. For the last two weeks, the wind has brought some great waves. Here are a few photos from the past few weeks.
