At this point, and put simply, even currently holding a 3200 point lead over Kelly, Joel must finish at least 1 place higher than Kelly at the Billabong Pipe Masters, in order to become the 2012 ASP WCT World Champion due to the throw away result that Kelly has (1750 points) vs. Joel’s throw away result of (5200 points).
Some interesting facts to consider are:
1) Kelly has won three events this year (Volcom Fiji Pro, Hurley Pro, and the Quiksilver Pro France.
2) Joel has not won an event this year, and has three runner up results (Billabong Rio Pro, Billabong Pro Teahupoo, and the Hurley Pro).
3) Kelly and Joel have only matched up once in 2012, with Kelly taking out the win in the Finals at the Hurley Pro.
5) Kelly is the record holding six-time winner of the Billabong Pipe Masters, winning in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999, and most recently in 2008.
6) Joel has never won the Billabong Pipe Masters.
Of course none of these facts mean anything once the heat clock starts for Kelly and Joel’s remaining 2012 Billabong Pipe Masters Heats.
