The Inertia

When Sunset does its thing properly, it is one of the most amazing waves in the world. And for the second round of the Vans World Cup on Sunday, it really did its thing. Outside sets hit the 20-foot plus mark, and the conditions were just about perfect for both spectators and competitors alike.

One of the best heats of the day came when Zeke Lau, Jamie O’Brien, Patrick Gudauskas, and Leonardo Fioravanti found themselves in near-perfect conditions. While Pipe specialist Jamie O’Brien and the Californian Gudauskas advanced, Hawaiian Ezekiel Lau faced a disaster: needing a semi-final finish to requalify, he lost in the dying seconds by only .06 of a point.

Sunset legend Sunny Garcia lost to Uruguay’s Marco Giorgi, Joan Duru, and Hizunome Bettero. After a dismal heat with a .57 and a 1.50, Garcia bowed out and paddled in with three minutes still on the clock.

The forecast is looking solid for the remaining heat of the Vans World Cup. Watch it live on Worldsurfleague.com.
