The Inertia

Want the freedom to live life on your own terms? If you had more control over your time and finances, would you be involved in more travel and surfing? As surfers, we value our time and enjoy the ability to do what we want. If only we had ways to obtain more of the things we wanted, like surfing and traveling. That wretched dollar, or lack there of, seems to always be getting in the way. Got to pay to play, right? Here are 2 simple ways to put a little extra cash in your pocket while enjoying the things you love:

1. Rent out unused space

People have been doing this for hundreds of years, but the concept was reborn in San Francisco when people decided to rent out unused rooms or airbeds to strangers when local hotels were overbooked. Sharing space provides more value and amenities with a guest experience that is unique and authentic. It’s better for everyone, really. Plus, you can find some pretty wicked places and deals that blow hotels and hostels out of the water.

Get on Airbnb and rent your unused space in your primary residence (a room, airbed, couch, or bunk). See how you can get travel credit through Airbnb. You can rent your entire primary residence while away. Generating income while traveling reduces expenses and creates more travel time on your same budget. It’s genius.

2. Rent out your extra surf gear

Do you have a few boards in your quiver that are just taking up space and collecting dust? Why not put those lesser-used, underutilized resources to use? Rent them out and make some extra cash. The average surfer has a quiver of 4 boards, and we all know you can only ride one at a time. Unless you’re this crazy fellow.

TheQuiver.com has developed an online marketplace connecting suppliers and demanders of surf gear. These days, folks are renting anything related to traveling and surfing. Surfboards, SUPs, straps, racks, and skimboards are all things you’ll see there. The ease of getting online, connecting with a local, and using their gear pales in comparison to renting an overpriced foamy.

Board rentals usually range from $15-$40 per day, per board. Depending on quantity, quality, and your hustle, this opportunity could generate a significant amount of additional income for you to utilize as you wish.
