Danny McDaniel and Jon Chambers were witness to an ocean phenomenon that luckily, turned out the right way. The two were kayaking near Ship Rock east of Catalina Island off the Southern California coast this week when a rather large predator clamped onto McDaniel’s kayak, leaving bite marks and two giant teeth. They told San Diego’s 10News that the shark had to be at least 19 feet long.
“I saw a giant, triangular, conical-shaped head right there and a huge body. Just a massive body,” said McDaniel as the shark latched onto the boat. “I don’t think he took a full chomp. I think he just took a nibble and pushed.”
McDaniel and Chambers were taking a break from a scuba diving mission when the massive animal took its taste test and were apparently paddling separate boats. They decided to get back in the water later that day for another scuba session, refusing to let the sizeable fish scare them out of the water. That’s not to say it didn’t spook the hell out of them. “It’s one for the books. Not something you want to replicate,” Chambers told the news outlet. “He had the best shark attack experience without it being a bad story.”
