Nicaragua is known as the land of offshore barrels, and it lived up to its name for the ISA World Surfing Games at the iconic A-frame peak of Popoyo.
For nearly 300 days a year, the weather patterns caused by Lake Nicaragua are responsible for perfect conditions for surfers near Rivas–a three hour drive from the capital city of Managua. Boasting 82-86 degree air and water temperatures, beautiful undeveloped coastline and a plethora of empty gems, heaven on Earth does in fact exist. And it’s firing all… the… time.
ISA event photographer, Dave Nelson from Santa Cruz, California, traveled to the pristine spot to score some freesurf action before the event. And to no one’s surprise, Popoyo was going off. As they say in Nicaragua, estaba bobando (bombs were literally going off) in the form of perfect, warm water tubes. Muy bonitas…
