A horrifying act of “surf rage” is currently under investigation in Lennox Head Australia wherein a 55-year-old man allegedly held a 54-year-old woman’s head underwater repeatedly until she feigned unconsciousness.
The man was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assault, but authorities are currently trying to understand if he could face further charges for the August 22 incident.
According to reports, the man collided with the woman, who was riding a surf mat, on a wave while surfing Lennox Point. The man then repeatedly grabbed the woman by her head and held her underwater multiple times.
“This only stopped when the woman went limp in order to feign unconsciousness,” Richmond Police District crime prevention officer, Senior Constable David Henderson told the Northern Star.
Inspector Cameron Lindsay also told the outlet that there is a real chance more serious charges could be brought against the accused, especially given there is video evidence.
“This is a very worrying situation for someone to be held under water until they believe they will drown and we will allege she feigned or faked unconsciousness to be let go by the man,” said Lindsay.
“This incident is a worrying and despicable act on a victim who is just out having a surf and trying to enjoy the environment. Everyone needs to show respect and remember the laws of the land also apply when you are surfing.”
