Nearly eleven months ago, 19-year-old University of Iowa student Zach Wails made an impassioned speech about the rights of gay couples to marry to Iowa’s House of Representatives. This was before New York decided to legalize same-sex marriage (in June). Yesterday the clip went viral after it was posted on MoveOn.org with the headline, “Two Lesbians Raised a Baby and This Is What They Got: What’s the reason for opposing this again?” and it’s especially poignant as the U.S. presidential election and the accompanying wedge issues near.
Said Wails, “You are telling Iowans that some among you are second class citizens who do not have the right to marry the person you love. So, will this vote affect my family? Would it affect yours?”
