Mountain lions in Orange County. While there’s an easy cougar joke there, it’s easy to forget with all the glam of the Beach Cities that the OC still has some pretty wild country. Foothills that span for miles. And hopefully development doesn’t eat it all up. Because then we wouldn’t get scenes like this.
Mark Girardeau is an amateur wildlife photographer and videographer. He’d seen mountain lions on his game cams he has set up near Trabuco Canyon. But then he came upon this lion one evening as he was checking those cams, and the thing definitely wasn’t afraid. Notice that it’s tagged with a radio collar. She casually walks by Girardeau as he’s holding bear spray.
Girardeau is familiar with this particular lion he calls Uno. “I’ve been getting her on camera for about five years now,” he said. “She probably doesn’t know it but I’ve been watching her.”
