The Inertia

A new audio recording has emerged of the 2023 implosion of the Titan submersible. In a clip released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Friday, the “suspected acoustic signature” of the Titan submersible implosion can be heard.

The audio was recorded by a moored passive acoustic recorder roughly 900 miles from the Titan implosion site, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The Coast Guard’s Titan Marine Board of Investigation (MBI) released the audio as part of the investigation and as an investigation exhibit.

It’s been a little over a year and a half since the OceanGate disaster gripped the world. On June 18, 2023, the Titan submersible was taking tourists to see the wreckage of the Titanic, when it catastrophically failed, instantly killing everyone inside. Five people were onboard: OceanGate founder and CEO Stockton Rush, British aviation tycoon Hamish Harding, French deep-sea explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son Suleman Dawood.

The first photo of the wreckage was released in September, taken by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) owned by Pelagic Research Services, during a series of dives to recover the remaining Titan submersible debris.
