The Inertia

Footage of a deadly plane crash in Lithuania was captured by a nearby ski park webcam Monday morning. The Boeing 737 crash happened near the Lithuanian capital and was expected to land at the Vilnius Airport. Instead, the DHL cargo plane plummeted into a residential area at least half a mile short of its destination and crashed into a two-story building.

One of the four crew members aboard the 737 died and miraculously, there were no civilian casualties. Bozena Jerenkovic, a medical doctor who was part of the emergency team on site, told ABC News that 13 people were evacuated from the scene with no injuries after first responders arrived.

The ski park webcam footage was just one of several webcams in the area that captured the crash. It came from Liepkalnis Winter Entertainment Park, a small ski area near the site of the crash. According to the resort’s website, there are no open trails and no lifts currently operating for the upcoming season.

Officials, meanwhile, are investigating the accident and haven’t determined a cause of the crash. According to ABC News, communication between the pilots and on-the-ground controllers moments before the crash showed no indication of an emergency. Pilots were running through their standard approach routine just minutes before they were supposed to touch down at Vilnius Airport and the crash happened moments later. This leads to speculation that whatever caused the crash caught the pilots completely by surprise.
