The Inertia

Three months ago, Carmen Canovas Cervello was snorkeling in the Maldives when she was attacked by a shark. Cervello was on vacation and went snorkeling and free diving at Vaavu Atoll. She was in the water for about 45 minutes, snorkeling inside a group of sharks, when a nurse shark bit her in the shoulder.

Her dive buddy, Ibrahim Shafeeg, was behind the camera and captured the attack on film. Although Cervello suffered a six-inch wound, she was relatively okay after the attack.

“It is highly recommended that divers do not try to feed nurse sharks while swimming with them,” Shafeeg shared on social media alongside the video. “Accidents happen during freedives at Shark Point while feeding. Take precautions while swimming with sharks.”

“After the shark bite, we thought nothing major about it as it was only a minor injury. So we cleaned the wound and continued snorkeling at the same spot again,” Shafeeg told the New York Post.

Cervello and Shafeeg consider the bite a warning and are grateful it wasn’t more serious.
