A 17-year-old girl has been fatally bitten by a shark in Queensland. The attack occurred at Bribie Island, a popular destination between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. The incident is the latest in a rash of Queensland shark encounters over the past three months.
At 4:45 p.m. Monday, Paramedics responded to reports of a “serious shark bite” incident at Woorim Beach, according to a Queensland Ambulance Services post on X. As ABC News Australia reports, the victim suffered injuries to her upper body while swimming on the southeast side of the island. Despite rescuers’ efforts, the victim succumbed to her injuries shortly afterwards.
“Woorim Beach will remain closed until further notice,” wrote Surf Life Saving Queensland in a statement.
This is the third shark attack in Queensland in three months. In December, youth pastor Luke Walford was killed while spearfishing at Humpy Island. Shortly before that, another man was rushed to the hospital after he also suffered a shark bite while spearfishing, though he survived with only moderate injuries.
