On July 22, beachgoers in Huntington Beach, Calif. witnessed a small plane crash into the water just a few yards from shore. According to reports, the accident involved a banner plane hitting the water at just after 1:30 p.m. Luckily, no serious injuries were reported.

In a lucky break, the California Surf Lifesaving Junior Guard championship competition was happening just down the beach. Several of the lifeguards in the competition were able to pull the pilot from the plane and get him back to the beach. FOX 11 reported that “the pilot appeared alert and was sitting upright as he was being checked by emergency crews.”

At the time of this reporting, the cause of the crash is unknown, but we’ll bet the pilot is feeling lucky to have walked away unscathed.
