Authorities are investigating what led to the death of a snowboarder at Park City Mountain. The unidentified 55-year-old visitor was found buried in the snow Thursday morning after authorities received a report of an injured snowboarder at the Canyons Village at Park City Mountain in Park City, Utah.

“An adult male snowboarder was found buried in snow near the ‘Alley’ run,’” said the Summit County Sheriff’s Office in a press release. “A family member assisted ski patrollers in locating and digging the individual out before he was transported to an on-site medical facility.” Fox 13 Salt Lake City reports that the buried snowboarder later died in that facility, after receiving life saving care.

The Sheriff’s office further clarified that, “While the exact circumstances surrounding how the individual became buried remain unclear, there are no indications that the incident was avalanche related.”
