Here’s an example of Labor Day Weekend celebrations gone horribly awry. On Sunday morning, two boats collided off of Catalina Island, leaving one passenger dead and another missing.
The crash occurred around 1:30 am on Sunday off of Descanso Bay, right near the island’s iconic and picturesque movie theater. A small dinghy carrying five people collided with a larger, approximately 14-foot boat. According to authorities, both vessels were moving at the time of the crash but it was unclear if either had their lights on.
One man, Michael Harris, was killed in the incident. Three others from the dinghy suffered minor injuries, but the fifth passenger has yet to be found. The operator of the larger boat also suffered minor injuries.
Harris’s father Peter, who was a former owner of the San Francisco 49ers, confirmed his son’s death via a Facebook post:
“Today our family, the community and yes, the world, lost a truly spectacular young man. Our son Michael died this morning while living his life as he did everyday…with kindness, friendship, love of family, caring for others, having fun, being a friend and as one of the really good guys.”
