Maybe there is something to this whole El Nino thing? Officials with Maui’s Haleakalā National Park closed the summit district this weekend after a heavy snowstorm (for Hawaii) pummeled the 10,000-foot peak with at least three inches of snow in some places. Winds were expected in the 45-65 mph range with gusts up to 85 mph. The park was expected to remain closed until at least 9 a.m. Monday morning. A storm system known as a Kona Low has slammed the islands with low temperatures, wind, rains, and big surf–albeit surf that is far from clean.
