On Saturday afternoon, a man jumped out of a helicopter near the iconic First Point in Malibu. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the man, whose identity has not been released, was in a chartered helicopter. The doors had been taken off for a photo shoot, and nearly an hour into the flight, at just after 1 p.m., he jumped from the aircraft approximately one mile south of the Malibu Pier.
“The pilot reportedly put the chopper into a banking turn to use gravity to keep the man inside, in a futile attempt to prevent an apparent suicide,” wrote the Los Angeles Daily News.
According to the lead detective working on the case, the pilot attempted to grab the 42-year-old as he prepared to jump, but had to keep the helicopter in the air. After the man hit the water, a rescue boat managed to get him out of the water. He was brought to the pier, but rescuers weren’t able to resuscitate him. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
