The Inertia

Apocalyptic imagery continues to stream from the Big Island as lava flow from the eruption of Kilauea Volcano has sent molten rock spewing through neighborhoods, burning everything in its path (the Ford Mustang parked in the wrong spot, above, is exhibit A). Fissures in the Earth have opened (at least 10, according to reports) sending gasses and fiery lava everywhere.

At Leilani Estates, at least 26 homes have been burnt as government agencies required evacuations. The U.S. Geological Survey said lava is spewing 330 feet into the air in some places. Most of the 1,700 people living in the neighborhood have left.

The volcano’s eruption was caused by a series of earthquakes, which continue to hamper the island in the form of tremors. A 5.6-magnitude quake hit south of the volcano about 11:30 a.m. Friday and was followed about an hour later by a 6.9-magnitude shake. A combo of noxious gas, lava flow and earthquakes have the community on edge.
