As kids, many of us dreamt of finding fossils or signs of ancient life. Although few of us succeeded, many can attest to digging through the sand or dirt in hopes of finding something special. Last week, that dream came true for eight-year-old Riley Gracely when he found a giant prehistoric shark tooth while on vacation in South Carolina.
Gracely and his family are big fans of fossil hunting and take an annual trip to search for shark teeth and other fossils. According to Fox-19, the family stopped by Palmetto Fossil Excursions on this year’s trip where Gracely spotted a fossilized shark tooth stuck in the dirt.
The tooth measured in at five inches and the family believes it predates the megalodon, making it in the ballpark of 22-million years old. On social media, Palmetto Fossil Excursion called Gracely’s discovery the “find of a lifetime.”
“I want to go back to find more big teeth so I can add them to my collection,” says Gracely.
