What in the actual hell? Things went completely backward–quite literally–at this ski resort in Georgia. The lift malfunctioned at Gudauri, a resort in the Greater Caucasus Mountains. The chairlift actually started running in reverse, and at a much higher rate of speed than normal, sending skiers and riders flying all over the place like rag dolls. According to reports, there were no fatalities but there were at least 10 injuries that are being monitored among those taken to the hospital after the mishap. One report said that officials at the resort blamed it on engine failure, but an investigation is obviously still pending.
Chairlifts have caused a lot of carnage over the years but this has got to be one of the gnarlier instances caught. Here’s another angle from Yuri Leontyev, a 32-year-old man from Belarus. “The ski lift stopped and started going in reverse,” he told CNN. “We had to jump from it, because at the bottom (of the hill) it was total trash and no chance to stay safe.”
