The Wave House, an iconic Malibu oceanfront property whose design was inspired by cresting waves, has changed hands for the first time in 37 years. The house, designed by architect Harry Gesner in the 1950s, was bought by venture capitalist Joshua Kushner and model Karlie Kloss for $29.5 million.

The 6,200-square-foot Malibu property sits tucked in a cove in western Malibu and has been an iconic feature of the Southern California coastline since its completion in 1963. Designed “to have the look of a giant wave at the peak of its strength,” the design of the property is also indelibly linked to surfing. Gesner, a lifelong surfer, drew the original design for the house on a literal surfboard. “I designed it while sitting on a surfboard out by some rocks near the shore,” Gesner told Curbed, “I drew it on the board with a grease pencil.”

The house was originally built for Gesner’s friend and fellow surfer Gerry Cooper. In the 70s, ownership passed on to Rod Stewart, who then sold it in 1987 to record executive Mo Ostin, who led Warner Bros. Records from the 1960s into the ‘90s. The house most recently hit the market in June 2023, when it was listed for $49.5 million.

As the Wall Street Journal reports, the new owners of the home are Joshua Kushner and Karlie Kloss. Kushner is the founder of Thrive Capital, a venture-capital firm that has backed technology companies including Instagram, GitHub, and Spotify. Kloss is a fashion model, former Victoria’s Secret Angel, former Project Runway host, and founder of Kode with Klossy, a coding camp for girls. The property adds to the couple’s expanding portfolio of real estate holdings, including a $21.5 million, 15,000-square-foot mansion in Miami and a $35 million, 7,200-square-foot New York City penthouse.
