A fisherman at Dias Beach in Mossel Bay, South Africa saved the life of a drowning woman by putting his fishing rod to good use.
According to the National Sea Rescue Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to drowning prevention in South Africa, the incident occurred at just after midnight on December 18. The angler was casting from the beach when the 31-year-old woman got caught in a nearby rip.
Realizing she was in trouble, the fisherman — using a Kabeljou hook, for those interested — cast at her in hopes of giving her something to hang on to. Amazingly, the hook snagged the drowning woman’s jeans and the fisherman was able to simply reel her in. When she reached waist deep water, he waded in to assist her the rest of the way.
Emergency services had already been called and they arrived on the scene shortly after she reached the shoreline. “She was treated for non-fatal drowning symptoms by paramedics and following medical treatment she required no further assistance,” the National Sea Rescue Institute wrote.
