At least three people are dead and over 20 others are critically injured after a deadly Honolulu fireworks show on New Year’s Eve.
According to the Honolulu Fire Department, the accident occurred a few minutes before midnight in a neighborhood near the Honolulu airport.
“I’ve been in EMS over 30 years and this is probably one of the worst calls I’ve ever been on as far as the immense tragedy and amount of patients and severity of the injuries,” Honolulu Emergency Services Department Director Dr. Jim Ireland said in a news conference early Wednesday.
When paramedics arrived on scene, two people were declared dead. The others were taken to the hospital and treated for their injuries.
“This incident is a painful reminder of the danger of illegal fireworks,” Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said, “which put lives at risk, drain our first responder resources, and disrupts our communities.”
Details are still sparse, but the explosion is being investigated. The victims have not yet been identified.
