Last May, the surf world was turned upside down after learning of Shawn “Barney” Barron’s passing. The iconic Santa Cruz surfer and Maverick’s pioneer died at the young age of 44 years old. His aerial surfing, super hero wetsuits, and attention-grabbing antics in and out of the water seized the world’s attention.
To honor his legacy, the good folks at Volcom made a surf movie/documentary-type film about Shawn and are premiering it this Saturday, May 7th in Santa Cruz, California at the Pono Hawaiian Grill at 9 p.m. If you can’t make it, the film will be premiering online the following day on the Volcom Facebook and YouTube page.
“This is a candid film collage celebrating the incomparable Shawn ‘Barney’ Barron,” said Volcom. “Not only was Barney the innovative surfer whose acrobatic agility perfectly matched the superhero wetsuits he often wore, he was also an artist, comedian, son, brother, and true friend who lived and breathed laughs and creativity into everything he did. Despite the challenges of his bipolar disorder, he maintained an infectiously positive attitude, irrefutable love for life, and endless generosity that brightened the lives of all who knew him. His spirit reminds us that now is all we have… It reminds us to live now to the fullest.”
