A chairlift fell 20 feet to the ground at a New Hampshire ski resort this weekend. Luckily, only one person was on board at the time and they sustained “non life-threatening” injuries. Authorities are currently investigating what could have caused the terrifying incident.

Just after noon on Sunday, February 2, first responders were called to Attitash Mountain Resort in Bartlett, New Hampshire for a report that a chair detached from a chairlift and fell to the ground. According to a press release from the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s office, one person was on the chair at the time, a man who was transported to an area hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries” as a result of the approximately 20-foot fall. On Monday, the office revealed that the man has been released from the hospital.

According to the Fire Marshal’s office, preliminary investigation pointed to a mechanical failure that caused one of the chairs to dislodge from the cable. However, that was just the beginning to an ongoing investigation involving contacting the manufacturer of the lift and reviewing records of past inspections. According to the release, the most recent state inspection was in November of 2024.  A spokesperson for Vail Resorts, the owner of Attitash, told ABC News the resort does daily lift inspections.

As of 2:00 p.m. Monday, the Flying Bear lift was still closed.
