While this is undoubtedly cool, it happened in at Otago University in Dunedin of New Zealand, so we really would have been more surprised had no one been paddling along the overflowing river. Rather than sloshing through campus, these kayakers (namely members of the school’s canoe club) delightedly took to the Leith River in full gear, as captured by YouTube user Michael Bollen.
According to Stuff, “[t]en kayakers – nine men and one woman – braved the Leith stream, which runs through the Otago University campus, on Wednesday after it was transformed into a raging river following heavy rain in Dunedin.”
Here, for comparison’s sake, is what the campus looks like on a less rainy day.
Unfortunately, the flooding isn’t all fun and games, with Citizen Side reporting that “[o]ver 150 properties in the area are now without electricity, following the flooding. Sand bags are being used to protect homes in South Dunedin and Mosgiel on the South Island.
We at The Inertia Mountain hope that Otago and the surrounding communities keep their heads above water and wade through the storms with minimal damage or loss.
