Late Thursday night, Haleiwa and Waialua residents began reporting a large flaring fireball off the coast. That glowing in explosion, in the dark Hawaiian night sky, was two marine helicopters colliding.
Rescue crews are now searching through debris scattered 2.5 miles off Haleiwa to find any possible survivors. Each of the CH-53 transport choppers were carrying six people, so in total, 12 are missing.
According to the Marine Corps Times, rescue teams found a life raft amidst the fiery wreckage, although there wasn’t anybody in it.
On Wednesday afternoon, Marine Corps Hawaii posted a video on their Facebook page of a CH-53 helicopter from the same squadron involved in Thursday night’s crash conducting an insert and extra training mission aboard the CW3 Harold C. Clinger.
Yesterday, Marines with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463, also known as Pegasus, supported Soldiers with the 8th Theater Sustainment Command and the 25th Infantry Division to conduct insert and extract training aboard Logistic Support Vessel 2, also known as the CW3 Harold C. Clinger.
