beach cleanup crew finds whale penis

Turns out that whales have penises that are about as big as you thought. Photo: NatureBornholm//Instagram

The Inertia

A couple of guys on a beach cleanup crew on Bornholm, a little island in Denmark, picked something up that they suspected to be a dead snake. They were wrong, though. It was actually a whale penis.

A big weird creature washed up on land close to Snogebæk on Monday,” NaturBornholm, a local conservation group, wrote in an Instagram post. It turned out to be a penis belonging to the young humpback whale that earlier this year washed up at Dueodde in south Bornholm. It was a different day at work.”

Generally, the pair of beachgoers finds all manner of trash, which is all too common of a sight these days. Perhaps a piece of a vessel every now and then, and maybe a dead bird or two, but never a whale penis measuring about five feet in length.

It’s not only rare to find a cut off whale wang on a beach, either. It’s rare to see one attached to a whale. Despite their size, whale penises are hidden away in something called a “genital slit,” which might be the worst pairing of words in the world.

Surprisingly, this is not the first time someone has stumbled across a whale penis. In October, 2022, a TikToker in Australia took to social media to identify the floating hunk of meat.

The most recent whale penis find is currently in a freezer somewhere until researchers figure out what, if anything, they want to do with it. One would assume they’ll end up using it for some kind of prank, because that is the most obvious thing to do when finding a whale penis.
