Local police have confirmed a 12-year-old skier died following an accident at New Hampshire’s Cranmore Mountain Resort on the morning of New Year’s Eve. The tragic accident happened when the young boy ran into a tree on the mountain’s intermediate level Bandit Trail before midday Tuesday. According to local ABC affiliate WMUR in Manchester, he was wearing a safety helmet when the accident occurred.
North Conway firefighters were called to to the resort just before 10:45 a.m. Tuesday morning, where Cranmore Mountain Ski Patrol were treating the young skier. He was unconscious from the accident when Cranmore Mountain Ski Patrol arrived at the Bandit Trail and then transported him to the base of the mountain. Emergency responders then brought the skier to Maine Heath Memorial Hospital, less than two miles from the resort. Conway Police Chief Christopher Mattei says he died at the hospital from the injuries he’d sustained in the crash.
“On behalf of the Conway Police Department, and all the first responders who assisted, I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the family members of the 12-year-old boy,” Mattei said.
While details of the event have been scarce, including the name of the victim, Cranmore Mountain reportedly saw several serious accidents on Tuesday. Assistant North Conway Fire Chief Josh MacMillan told the Conway Daily Sun they had responded to seven calls on the mountain by 2:15 p.m. A second incident involving another minor occurred on the same Bandit Trail around 1:30 p.m. That accident required the guest to be transported from the mountain via Life Flight, although McMillan wasn’t able to confirm if that person had also been taken to Maine Heath Memorial Hospital.
As of this time, no more information has been shared by Conway Police concerning the second accident and no other fatal accidents have been reported.
