In 1990, l lost my brother David to a rare heart defect he had from birth. David was attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh when this condition claimed his life at the age of 19. A Memorial Fund was set up by members of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church (Hagerstown, Maryland) after his death. The fund benefits art students enrolled at Hagerstown Community College who plan to attend a four-year college or an art school. This fund grew quickly, but as time passed, donations dwindled.
As a way to help raise money for the fund, we created Surfer in the Sky. The idea came to me two summers ago while in North Carolina. While sorting through a crate of surf art at one of David’s favorite surf shops, the idea hit me of how cool it would be to have this in book form: surf art set along side lines of poetry inspired by my brother.
I began to reach out to various surf artists from around the country and was blown away by the response. I was most delighted when Frank Holmes, artist for the SMiLE album, agreed to do a piece in David’s memory.
David loved life, loved the beach, loved to surf, and loved to play music. He was aware his time here would not be long so he made the most of it, never allowing his illness as an excuse or for pity. Always making the most of what was given to him is how I know he has been surfing the sky since his departure.
