Paradise is not a possession. As one of the most beautiful and well placed locations on Earth, Hawaii has been fought over since the US government annexed the islands in the late 19th century. “Free Hawaii” is a statement to both the power of the US government and to the current local movement to rid Hawaii of outside influence. Hawaii, and all the Earth’s beautiful places, belong to no one entity. They are free for all to enjoy. Universally speaking, it is a slogan in support of a shared planet and the free movement of people.
The video was inspired by our friends at Panda Diplomacy and their “No Locals” t-shirt line, a cheeky statement on the hostile environment found at some breaks from the people who pretend to own it. In “Free Hawaii” fashion, the “No locals” slogan suggests that the ocean is open to everyone.
