David Macomber is the face and artist behind the New Jersey based art brand Shark Sugar, which combines the organic nature of surfing with art. “Surfing, at its core, is so organic, natural and beautiful,” he says. Macomber uses scrap wood, steel, paint, and recycled surfboard debris or spare parts to create his innovative, organic artworks.
His goal is to create a hand-made style of communication. He wants to communicate his love of surfing and the beauty of surfing. There are no exotic depictions of Rincon, J-Bay or even Pipeline. All of his art focuses on his home, New Jersey and its chock-full-of-stoke. Though he spent a few years out in California, Macomber remains loyal to his East Coast roots and relays that in his vibrant unique collection of art.
Macomber lives with his wife and 2-year-old son, and has been promoting his art while working as a graphic designer for the past 12 years. He has designed wetsuits for Hyperflex and teamed up with Faceplant Boardriders to create longboard skateboard designs. He was featured on popular surf blog the SurfBang and other East Coast websites. His love of God, creation, and surfing help sponsor the Brendan Borek Organization, a group founded after a local 16-year-old surfer died from bone cancer. Macomber sells his artwork each year to raise money for families that have children with cancer.
