More and more, it seems, surfing is being put on a plate and served to the non-surfing public. The most recent example of this is the Billie Joe and Norah Jones duet, Kentucky, off of their album, Foreverly.

Kassia Meador and Colin Whitbread star in the video for the song. They drive through sunset after sunset, surf really well, shoot bottles, wear hats, climb gates, and don’t do anything related to Kentucky at all, except maybe shooting bottles. Maybe they drank bourbon behind the scenes. But they sure do make Kentucornia/Califucky (ha!) look amazing.

Foreverly is an interpretation of The Everly Brothers’ album, Songs Our Daddy Taught Us. It seems odd that the ex-glue sniffing Green Day front man and Norah Jones would get together and play some ’50s rockabilly. I had a hard time with it at first, because like almost all products of the ’80s, I loved Green Day (in the Dookie era), and The Everly Bros. were a page out of childhood road trips. I thought that mixing the two might lead to some kind of internal disaster for me, but they nailed it, and Kassia and Colin nailed it as well. Someone get me a a rifle and a longboard, because I’m heading to a vine-covered shack in the mountains where I’ll be bravely fighting the battle of time.
