I couldn’t be more stoked to partner up with Grom Social. It’s an honor for me to be able to teach the youth some of the creative stuff I’ve learned along the way. As part of my role, I have a page on the website called Gromtography where I post daily shots from around Hawaii and other parts of the world I visit and I teach the kids about surf photography and ocean art. It’s super cool to interact with them and answer any questions they have about photography, surfing, marine life and whatever else they’re into. Kids all excel differently, and for me, it was through creativity that I was able to find my way and realize what I wanted to do with my life.
The budget for the art program at Sunset Beach Elementary has been completely depleted by the state. Apparently, there is just no room for the arts and creativity in the classroom. It’s a shame the powers that be have their priorities so backwards. All supplies and even the art teacher who only comes in a couple times a month are volunteers, so next month, I’m giving a presentation to the students on surf photography and ocean art for Art Appreciation Day presented by Friends Of Sunset Beach (a local non-profit that helps raise money for the art and music program every year). Grom Social, as well as Matuse Wetsuits, is sponsoring my class. They’ve printed a bunch a posters and stickers for the kids using my photos and Matuse has even thrown in some rubber for a few lucky kids.
Grom Social really supports the arts and creativity, so for every kid in Hawaii who signs up on our site as a free member between now and January 31st, GS is donating $3 per kid to the art program at Sunset Beach Elementary. That’s potentially a lot of art supplies, so if you’re a grom or a parent of a grom in Hawaii and reading this, please join our site and support the arts!
Recently, Grom Social has decided to put together a surf team here in Hawaii. I’ll be managing the team and picking a few groms from each island who we feel represent the mission at Grom Social in and out of the water. On top of photo incentive, we’ll have an incentive for good grades.
