Last summer, Alex Honnold achieved one of the most incredible feats in the history of modern climbing – perhaps in the history of modern sport. In just under four hours, he climbed the 3,000-foot face of Yosemite’s world-famous El Capitan without a rope or safety gear. The level of physical strength, endurance, mental fortitude, and sheer will to pull off the climb – where a single misstep could have sent him hurtling to the valley below – further enshrines Honnold as one of the best athletes in the world.
The trailer above is a teaser for National Geographic‘s forthcoming film, “Free Solo.” From filmmaker E. Chai Vasarhelyi and photographer Jimmy Chin, it’s an unflinching portrait of Honnold just before and during his momentous (and extremely dangerous) feat.
