The Inertia

By all accounts, it’s been a tragic year in the backcountry. Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming have all seen avalanche deaths this season. The snowpack is so upside down in Colorado, many are choosing to stay out of the backcountry all together. Safety crews are doing their best across the West to limit avalanche danger. To that point, the Utah Avalanche Center this week released scary video of a massive avalanche shot from a helicopter. The area was being controlled by the Utah Department of Transportation in the Stair Gulch area of Big Cottonwood Canyon outside Salt Lake City. In the video you can see the avalanche barreling towards the road. Officials are hoping to limit avalanche danger above these well-used thoroughfares.
