Well, it seems not all backcountry users are adhering to the shelter-in-place protocols. The Utah Avalanche Center has posted at least two self-reported avalanches in the last few days from users who’ve been out in the state’s backcountry. And with storms set to hit the West in the next few days, no telling how many people will be out there this week. While there’s no time stamp on these updates (meaning they could have happened before protocols were put in place to fight the spread of COVID-19 and just recently posted to Utah Avy), there’s still a certain amount of caution people should take to avoid spreading the Coronavirus, or tapping out hospitals busy fighting the pandemic in case of injury.
This snowboarder took a giant slide-for-life when he set off an avalanche at the top of the run and then careened down through a pinch, finally coming to what looks to be at least 2,000 feet down the mountain. It’s incredible he was able to stay on top of the snow. “Close call on Mt. Ogden yesterday,” the Center wrote on the post. “Thanks to the party involved for reporting this slide and sharing the video with us.” Be careful out there.
