Photos: Hui-Hui Biological Reserve/Magic Mountain Lodge

The Inertia

Humans are creative. For centuries, we’ve been able to adapt to the environment, building our homes in the craziest of places. And this sevens-story gem of a backcountry lodge in Patagonia, Chile built into the forest, is a prime example. And it’s not the only reason to stay there: The Magic Mountain Lodge  holds prime real estate near the Huilo-Huilo Biological Reserve created in 1999 and boasting 230-square-miles established for wildlife conservation and eco tourism that includes the longest zip-line in the world and year-around skiing in the nearby Andes.

And the lodge is ridiculous. It was built with repurposed, local timber and the structure fits perfectly into the rainforest environment. There are more high-end, hotel-like options, separate lodges for rent and even camping. And kids six and under stay for free. And stays start at $55 per night. Exploring the lodge alone is an adventure with the catwalk-like bridges connecting the different structures within the facility and the spiral staircases accessing the lodge’s upper rooms.

Hiking, camping, exploring the rainforest or taking longer excursions into the Andes or over the border into Argentina, Magic Mountain seems like they have something figured out.
