I don’t kayak. I have, but it’s always been on calm little rivers where the trout are happily floating beneath me. This is a whole different thing… and a really, really scary thing, at that.
During a trip to Nevis Bluff, this kayaker got stuck in a violent sieve–a narrow opening where the water is forced underneath a rocky outcropping. When his partners realized what was happening, they rushed to help, but they were powerless to fight against the strength of the river.
“It’s hard to put into words what it’s like when you see somebody die,” said Rush Sturges. “How many drops, how many more crazy rivers can you run before you lose a friend?” And although he didn’t actually see someone die this time around, it’s a chilling reminder just how quickly things can go wrong.
