The first thing we noticed was how much it sounded like a surf film. Then we read the fine print and realized they were indeed surfers. Shot in the Cheviot Hills in 1984, these surfers decided to jump out of the (assumed) cold waters of Tynemouth to take to even colder waters — or what we know as snow.
How did they equip themselves? That is the best part: this crew knew how to “cold-mould plywood and laminate fibreglass,” so they did what any self-respecting wanderer would and made their own. Based on the Burton Performer fishtail shape popular in the states at the time, there were no bindings or edges. Instead they used webbing straps and aluminum fins.
With everything happening in the United Kingdom scene these days, rather cool to see the sport’s start across the pond.
